“Understanding the physical makeup and setup of your bass is essential in developing the feel and tone you’ve always wanted” “Adjusting the bass truss rod, setting the correct intonation and experimenting with the string height are all things we know are important for getting the most out of our instrument but there’s always the temptation to rely on luthiers and repairmen in performing even simple bass setups. DIY setups can seem so daunting” “We can also spend so much time dealing solely with playing and practice that we don’t take a minute to work on the actual tone and sound of the notes we’re playing.” “Setup, Tone & Gear Essentials provides you with the skills necessary to perform your own basic setup before diving deep into the world of tone creation” Mark J Smith (Creator of Talkingbass). I figured questions like 'How do I get the tone off Song X by Band Y' are common enough on the net, and I know there are a lot of guys obsessed with absolutely nailing popular guitar tones, but google searches usually just bring up individual questions on various message boards.I'm wondering if there's a site that would allow me to say, look up a Big Muff, and see maybe a list of recordings it had been used on, and different settings for getting those tones (or close based on the gear used). Not exactly a comprehensive db but there are some sites like thisThese are more about creating a specific tone for a certain song usually. Or the gear that a famous player likely used. The problem with doing this is that there are tons of variables and often more than one way to achieve a tone. The pickups, the strings, the amp, and over variability of components from pedal to pedal (especially with the vintage gear).

Not to mention the attack of the player. Having said that, there should be some basic general direction for getting the 'hot for teacher' tone for example. A recipe, if you will. It won't always taste exactly like grandmas but it will get you most of the way there.

It's a great idea for someone to do. Wish I had the time. Window.location.href stopped working recently on excel for mac. I just got a Zoom B3 recently and was thinking of doing this for Zoom guitar and bass patches, at least. Was gonna post here to gauge interest and then saw this thread. I was thinking:- allow upload of single and sets of patch export files- allow tagging of patches (e.g., guitar, bass, metal, synth, etc.)- voting on patches (liking)- uploading of audio demos of patches (or links to them)- links or artist/song titles that the patch is emulating- a random patch generator! (easy for Zoom stuff, not sure about others)- select and download complete sets of patches, allowing for sort, rename.

E.g., download 100 distortion patches so you can quickly try them all- allow for bulk param changes, e.g., make all patch output levels the same- discussion forum- alerts when new patches are uploaded with a given tagAdd a comment below if you're interested.
